Yuri Ancarani (Italy, 1972) lives and works between Ravenna and Milan. He focalizes his work on the analysis and the study of his originary region: the city of Ravenna, its suburbs and its history but also contradictions and aberrations. In his videos Ancarani evokes surrealistic situations where nature and technology meet and create a more familiar and less perturbing reality.
Baal (2007) is a trip inside a pine forest. A child is walking through the trees in the dark. The silhouette of a chimney appears through the leaves, tall symbol of a modernity full of doubts and relicts of an époque that held in trust to the technology hope of ransom and progress. The narrating voice announces the victory of the light on the darkness and is taken from a 1957 Italian documentary on the Ravenna’s petrochemical pole, the zone where the artist shot the video.
